The Mount Community Centre in Peterborough, Ontario, has a mission to reduce poverty and foster community development. For the past decade its iconic building and exceptional grounds have proven that affordable housing and food security is possible with a sustainable economic model, when partners in nonprofit, private sector, and government combine their resources and expertise, and work toward a common social goal.
TMCC’s long-term goal is to become the vendor of choice for unique social housing in their region, sustained by commercial revenue, and reliable community and partner funding.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead TMCC strategically and operationally. The ED provides direction, and strategic planning, ensuring the mission, vision, and policies of the organization are effectively executed. This includes comprehensive management and oversight of operations, finances, fundraising and revenue generation, capital acquisitions and improvements, staff and volunteers. A major responsibility is to plan and oversee revenue generation, including fundraising and grant procurement. Additionally, the incumbent will empower the Board of Directors to fulfill its governance and fiduciary duties.
Key Responsibilities
Operations
The ED leads and collaborates with the Property Managers at TMCC sites, and is responsible for hiring, supervising and evaluating staff and volunteers, creating an engaged working environment for all. The ED supports optimal operations by:
Developing actionable operations plans for their site that align with the strategic plan, and have measurable results and outcomes.
Creating and implementing a staffing plan, confirming priorities for new positions and contracted services.
Emphasizing the development of staff capabilities and fostering an engaged and empowered culture.
Providing direction to the Property Managers regarding day-to-day activities, including programs, services, and administration. Ensure day-to-day operations align with the overall strategic goals.
Providing direction and guidance concerning tenant services and support, the resolution of issues, and ensuring a safe and secure environment.
Directing and expanding use of the properties for gatherings, meetings, and events.
Ensuring all operations are conducted in full compliance with all applicable legislation, regulation, policies, directives, and the resolutions of the Board of Directors.
Reviewing and ensuring the accomplishment of operating objectives, adjusting priorities as appropriate.
Ensuring that tenants have a communication channel to management and staff.
Ensuring that human resource policies are in place and observed by managers consistent with Ontario employment standards and laws.
Hiring, training, and supervising staff, and fostering a culture of engagement, accountability, and integrity with a positive organizational culture and provide professional development opportunities.
Conducting performance evaluations and recommending personnel actions to the Board.
Ensuring compliance with employment standards, health and safety legislation, and organizational policies.
Acting as the primary spokesperson for TMCC, conveying clear and positive messaging to staff, tenants, external stakeholders and the community.
Fundraising and Revenue
The Executive Director oversees activities to secure government funding, donations, partnership opportunities, and grants, as well as new revenue generating opportunities: This includes:
Applying a Community Centric Fundraising framework to develop an annual, actionable fundraising plan and direct internal and external resources to execute the plan.
Building and maintaining relationships with funders, partners, donors, and political and community leaders to secure financial support, and spur growth.
Planning and executing revenue generation opportunities in collaboration with property managers that leverage additional value from facilities for maintenance and improvements.
Working with administrative staff, external resources, and volunteers to ensure a current donor database and regular communications to donors, partners, and funders.
Financial Management
Prepare budgets and capital forecasts, oversee financial accounts, report on revenue and expenditures, and ensure fiscal health, with the assistance of administrative staff.
Ensure all taxes are prepared and filed in a timely manner.
Maintain rent rolls, accounts receivable/payable, payroll, and source deductions.
Review monthly financial statements and report variances to the Board and Committee.
Coordinate audits and ensure sound accounting practices and internal controls.
Provide approvals and guidance to Property Managers on expenditures and budgets.
Oversee long-term asset management and financial strategies to ensure the sustainability of communities utilizing continuous improvement strategies.
Strategy and Development
The ED leads in developing a vision for TMCC and a strategy to achieve that vision including:
Developing with Board participation and relevant staff and stakeholder inputs, the next strategic plan and subsequent annual objectives and progress measures to achieve the plan.
Ensuring that long-term sustainability in the development and operation of properties is at the centre of strategic and operating plans.
Reporting to the Board on progress of the strategic plan and recommend options and adjustments as appropriate.
Governance
The Mount Community Centre was founded through the dedication and hands-on efforts of a founding board. The next stage is the transition from an operational Board to a governance Board with a professional management team and staff taking full responsibility for operations. The Executive Director will:
Lead the transition by establishing a management team to supervise staff and external participants to fulfill designated operational duties consistent with the strategic plan.
Provide timely activity updates, financial results, and strategic progress reports.
Distribute relevant materials, including context for agenda items, before meetings.
Keep the board focused on long-term goals and, complex issues, use visual aids like dashboards to convey performance trends.
Maintain a full understanding of organizational documents (bylaws, policies, minutes) to inform the board accurately.
Implement Board-approved policies, strategic plans, and operational priorities and discharge duties within authorities set out by Board documents.
Effectively deliver timely and accurate communications with the Board of Directors, providing essential information to support the Board’s fiduciary and oversight responsibilities, including key financial and operational reports.
Develop, review, and maintain organizational policies and procedures in collaboration with the Board.
Prepare agendas, reports, briefing materials, and minutes for Board and committee meetings.
Maintain corporate records, minute books, insurance coverage, and corporate filings
Advise the Board on legislative changes, compliance requirements, and organizational risks.
Communications
The Executive Director (ED) for The Mount Community Centre will hold the primary responsibility for strategic communication, acting as the bridge between the board, staff, and external stakeholders. They will ensure consistent messaging aligned with the organization's mission, provide regular, transparent, and accurate reports to the board, foster open internal dialogue, and serve as the main spokesperson for public relations and crisis management:
Ensure staff understand and align with the organizational mission and strategy.
Actively listen to staff, encourage open dialogue, and act on feedback to improve operations.
Lead staff to ensure consistent tone, style, and messaging across all channels.
Maintain brand consistency across all public-facing materials.
Cultivate relationships with media, donors, and government entities.
Identify potential reputational threats and develop strategies to address them.
Qualifications
Education
Required: A university degree or college diploma, in a field related to the organization's mission (e.g., business administration, public administration, social work, finance, or non-profit administration).
Preferred: A Master's degree, such as an MBA or a master's in a relevant specialization, is considered an asset.
Experience
Senior Leadership: 5+ years of progressive experience in a middle or senior management role within a related institution or organization.
Sector-Specific: Experience within the non-profit, government-funded, or relevant industry sector (e.g., healthcare, arts, social services) is a key requirement.
Board Relations: Proven success working effectively with a Board of Directors, understanding governance best practices and serving as a liaison between the board and staff. Experience in transitioning Boards from operations to governance is an asset.
Operational Oversight: Hands-on experience in various organizational operations, including human resources, financial systems management, program development, technology and commercial leasing
Fundraising & Stakeholder Relations: Experience in public relations, marketing, fundraising, grant writing, and building strong relationships with stakeholders (donors, funders, community members, government).
Key Skills and Competencies
Leadership: Ability to inspire, motivate, and manage a team, embodying TMCC's values and mission.
Strategic Thinking and Planning: The capacity to set a long-term vision, develop effective strategies, and manage change and risk.
Financial Acumen: A profound understanding of financial management, including budgeting, cash flow management, reading financial reports, and ensuring legal and regulatory compliance.
Communication: Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to articulate the organization's mission compellingly.
Entrepreneurship: Ability to think strategically outside-of-the-box when it comes to revenue/commercial generation and possess experience in demonstrating an entrepreneurial mindset.
Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Strong critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and the ability to make difficult decisions.
Adaptability: The capacity to adapt quickly to the evolving landscape of the non-profit sector and a commitment to continuous learning.
Passion for the Mission: A genuine belief in and commitment to the organization's mission is consistently noted as a critical attribute for success. Further, the position will be pivotal for helping the Mount and indeed the community build a new and stronger social infrastructure.

Work Environment
Full-time position (hours to be determined).
Predominantly on-site at 1545 Monaghan Road and/or 780 Argyle Street, both in Peterborough Ontario, with some flexibility for remote work.
