What is the Market Garden?
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the Market Gardens here at TMCC has been a self-sustaining garden project with a key focus in addressing food insecurity issues in Peterborough. The Market Gardens grow a variety of produce each year, with thriving plots packed with tasty fruits and vegetables.
People throughout the community are invited to pick produce that will serve them in creating a single meal. Those who take food are encouraged to make a donation – whatever you can afford! This has inspired The Market Garden’s motto: “pick with your hands, pay with your heart.”
We hope to see you here in the summer!
Where do the donations go?
All the donations received from The Market Garden go back into the community. Here is a list of the places that the donations go, and the benefits that they have on our Peterborough community:
-
Funds gathered go back into maintaining and running the Market Gardens.
-
Each year money is donated to the St. Vincent DePaul food bank.
-
Each week that the Market Garden is open, approximately three bushel baskets are filled and brought to the Trinity Community Centre to help feed the homeless people who are sheltered there.
-
Money has been donated Kawartha Food Share
-
Money has also been donated to The Mount Community Centre’s Tenant Social fund.
Who maintains The Market Gardens?
The Market Garden Project is being run and maintained entirely by a volunteer team! Our Market Garden coordinator, Blair Sawa, has dedicated thousands of hours towards building and growing The Gardens into something truly special. In addition, The Market Gardens has created a significant partnership with St. Peter High School. Many young volunteers have contributed large portions of their time towards supporting their community through the continued development of The Garden. This collaboration has also helped support the learning of many students in the Environmental Science program and the Technology program.
All of our volunteers are completely dedicated to the mission of The Market Gardens, which is to reduce food insecurity throughout our Peterborough community.
