Peterborough City and County are faced with a severe need for rental housing affordable for almost 2000 households and a 1% vacancy rate.
To reinforce this need and encourage local response from both private and non profit sectors, on Thursday, July 12, 2018, Peterborough- Kawartha MP Maryam Monsef, Minister for the Status of Women, hosted a Housing Summit in the auditorium at the Mount Community Centre. The audience included representatives from agencies such as the YES Shelter for Youth and Families, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Habitat for Humanity, Peterborough Housing Corporation, the Brock Mission, The Warming Room Ministries as well as members of City and County Councils and local construction companies. Minister Monsef was accompanied by Spadina-Fort York MP Adam Vaughan. Mr. Vaughan is the parliamentary secretary to the Families, Children and Social Development Minister Jean-Yves Duclos. He has been a long time advocate for the need for afforable housing and a leader in developing the Federal Government's National Housing Strategy.
The summit began with a moving prayer by Curve Lake Elder Dorothy Taylor. Sandy Woodhouse, a policy analyst for the City's Housing Division provided up to date data to demonstrate the need and the urgency. In conversation the two MP's outlned the major features of the National Housing Strategy and elicited questions from the audience. Attendees were invited to complete an information sheet indicating a desire to form partnerships to address local housing needs.Towards the end of the summit MP Monsef gathered together a few individuals willing to collaborate on an application to the National Co-investment Financing Initiative. As the owner of very valuable centre-city land, the Mount Community Centre attracted the interest of a few agencies and will be participating in this initiative.
