Features of The Mount Community Centre

The Mount Community Centre will offer a mix of housing and community uses to a property that is a historic and architectural gem in the City of Peterborough. This 10 acres in the middle of the City of Peterborough is set on a major arterial road. Its 131,400 square feet of buildings includes:

• apartments of various sizes and rent ranges
• performing arts spaces and event venues
• a large-scale kitchen
• limited office space

Food Centre

Renovations are underway to construct a welcoming space where people come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food. The Food Centre at The Mount Community Centre will offer programs and services such as a Food Business Innovation Centre, community gardens, café and catering services, along with demonstration and teaching opportunities. It will provide the space and tools to develop cooking and gardening skills and experiment with new foods. Our Food Centre will offer multifaceted, integrated and responsive programming in a shared space where food builds health, hope, skills and community.

Food Business Innovation Centre

The Food Business Innovation Centre will include food and process development, skills development, food safety awareness, and education and training opportunities. Local growers and producers will have opportunities to test and produce value added products. As a demonstration site and learning centre, users can increase access to the consumer by developing tools and skills such as recipe development, packaging and labeling, and receive advice and guidance through consultation with our partners at Peterborough Economic Development.

Community Gardens

Our community gardens will serve to increase food security and food security awareness by working with residents and other local agencies to plant, maintain, harvest and process the produce grown here.

Café

Upon completion and at the heart of The Mount Community Centre will be a Café, a great place for tenants and community members to grab some breakfast or lunch with family or friends.

And More…….

Other considerations for the space range from a catering facility to a teaching kitchen for educational and vocational purposes.

Funding

We want to acknowledge and thank our project funders Greenbelt, Community Futures Peterborough, and an anonymous donation of $50,000 which has enabled us to kick start construction on this project.
