Vision:
A welcoming place that changes lives and builds stronger communities.
Mission:
The Mount Community Centre is motivated by poverty reduction and community development. As we transform our iconic building and exceptional grounds, we focus on affordable housing and food security, and work with partners with complementary values and expertise. The Mount Community Centre’s future is as a one-of-a-kind centre for the communities that we nurture and serve.
Values:
We value Diversity and Inclusion, Care, Compassion and Integrity, Creativity and Innovation and Sustainability for people, communities and our environment. We respectfully acknowledge that we are on the treaty and traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. We offer our gratitude to the First Peoples for their care for, and teachings about, our earth and our relations. May we honour those teachings.
Brief History and Description of The Mount Community Centre:
In January 2012 the property of the Peterborough Sisters of St. Joseph, known as Mount St. Joseph was relisted for sale. This property with its 132,000 square foot convent and 10 acres of land had been the Motherhouse of the Sisters since 1895. When their membership started to decline the congregation decided to build a new residence adjacent to the original building. The women moved to their new home in 2009.
The Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network saw the possibilities. Through 2012 and into 2013, volunteer committees investigated the challenges of restoring the building for affordable housing. The Peterborough Poverty Network purchased the property on August 2, 2013.
The Peterborough Poverty Reduction Network transferred ownership to the newly incorporated not for profit - The Mount Community Centre in December, 2013. The first 43 apartments opened in the fall of 2016. Since then, 20 more apartments have been built. When our redevelopment is complete, TMCC will offer 78 apartment units of mixed sizes, types and rents. In addition to affordable apartments, The Mount Community Centre is home to several non-residential tenants, a state-of-the-art food centre and assembly rooms for community use.
Core Promise:
For many years, the very large home and property known informally as “The Mount” became empty and silent. It was left to an uncertain fate. At its centre was a historic building that had no clear future.
Just over a decade ago, those who dreamed about that future saw potential for ambitious renovation and renewal. It required a fresh identity for “The Mount” and a commitment to breathe new life into every nook and cranny of this old building. Yet our core commitment is not solely to a building. It is to those who now live here, people who come from a variety of backgrounds, often with dreams of a better life, seeking a safe place to call home. It is to those who work here as staff, volunteers and non-residential tenants – who collectively bring dedication to social services, the natural environment, education and better health care. And it is to our wider community, with great appreciation of generous support and belief in our cause.
We have arrived at the right time to articulate our core promise to all. In our beautiful, welcoming, park-like setting, we are a place for renewal and change. We nurture a sense of belonging plus imagination, learning and determined action. With our partners and supporters, we will work through social innovation toward better individual and collective futures, toward changing lives and building communities.
